‘Room’ Review: Out Now on Blu-Ray!

Posted by Hayden Burke on

Hayden Burke takes an in-depth look at one of this year's most anticipated releases.

It’s hard to believe that some of the youngest in the film industry are some of the most talented in recent history.

‘Room’ stars Brie Larson in a role that won her the Oscar for Best Actress at this year’s Academy Awards. In the film, Larson plays ‘Ma’, a young mother held captive in a singular room (how ironic) with her 5-year-old son (Jacob Tremblay), who knows nothing of an existing outside world, besides the world that exists on television.

I could mention the fact that this film was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director, then again, academy recognition is not nearly enough praise in terms of what this picture deserves.

It would be nearly impossible to describe this film, but what I can say is that it’s plot never drags, never rushes (yes, that was a necessary reference to ‘Whiplash’), being paced so perfectly and taken twists and turns so incredibly written, you will believe original stories still have the ability to become timeless classics.

Room-Larson-Tremblay‘Room’ is nothing short of a masterpiece, exploring the themes of captivity, isolation and introversion, presented in a way only possible through the incredible vision of director, Lenny Abrahamson and storytelling of screenwriter, Emma Donoghue (who additionally wrote the original novel the film is based on). Not only does the film showcase fantastic performances, but enables audiences to physically feel the suffering felt only by that of its two protagonists. It allows audiences to enter a world existing only within four walls, a device which only lengthens the shelf life of the picture. From the first moment the picture begins, audiences will feel confined within nothing but the room itself, as we hear nothing but the sound of breathing and are exposed to the bland, yet beautiful imagery of a scratched wall, a sink and a skyline. This is soon followed by Larson’s stunningly soft delivery of the line, “Go back to sleep…” – Sorry, Ma, but it looks like we are staying up and sticking through this with you.

As for the Blu-Ray, the film itself looks superlative, having been shot on the Red Epic Dragon, which transfers gorgeously to disc. The disc features a few features, inclroomblurayuding an Audio Commentary with director, Lenny Abrahamson, cinematographer, Danny Cohen, editor, Nathan Nugent and production designer, Ethan Tobman. Additional features includes a ‘Making of’ featurette, as well as ‘11×11’ and ‘Recreating Room’ which both take an in-depth look into the film’s production. All of which are worth a worth, however these are not sole reasons to go out of your way to purchase the disc, the film sells itself.

Based on the best-selling novel by Emma Donoghue, ‘Room’ additionally stars Joan Allen (The ‘Bourne’ Series), Sean Bridgers (HBO’s ‘Deadwood’) and William H. Macy (Showtime’s ‘Shameless’). ‘Room’ is out on Blu-Ray (and DVD) now!
