THE DROUGHT BREAKER: The long wait is over. But Jarryd Hayne rose to the occasion: the mercurial fullback was unstoppable at both ends of the field, setting up a try and scoring another as Laurie Daley's men dug deep at the death to beat back wave after wave of Maroon raids.

In a tight and desperate defensive struggle that remained on a knife-edge until the 71st minute when halfback Trent Hodkinson darted through a gap in the Maroons line to capitalise on a glut of NSW possession. Nine minutes later, celebrations began in earnest as the siren signalled the end of Queensland's reign. The Blues camp was ecstatic, and together players and fans soaked up a famous Origin victory that evoked memories of Steve Mortimer's heroes of 1985.
