Famously studio-phobic Romanian conductor Sergiu Celibidache made very few commercial recordings in his long career. But he made even fewer videos, and this 1969 televised performance of Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Torino della RAI is one of those very, very few. It's frankly fabulous from start to finish. With highly polished, brilliantly colorful, and extremely responsive playing from the Turin musicians, Celibidache turns in one of the best-executed, most physically beautiful, and most incredibly exciting Symphonie fantastiques ever recorded. With an absolutely clear beat, precisely executed gestures, and scrupulous attention to balances and articulation, Celibidache creates an interpretation of Berlioz's youthful masterpiece that glows with colors and seethes with passion but that always remains totally and completely under his control. Recorded in clean, two-track monaural and filmed in crisp black and white with very restrained camera work, this Symphonie fantastique should be seen by anyone who reveres Celibidache, or who wants to know why Celibidache was revered.
